1-1:55    Language Acquisition and Cultural Connection, presented by Karen Kllanxhja of Mesa County Libraries

This session is for audiences wishing to provide literacy and programming for non-native English speakers.  Staff of The Literacy Center of Mesa County Libraries will discuss programming and services offered to adult patrons of Mesa County, Colorado.  Topics to be discussed include collaboration, special events, program evaluation and success stories.

2-2:55     The Program for Migratory Children and Youth in Colorado, presented by Tomas Mejia of the Colorado Department of Education

This session will focus on supplemental support and instructional services provided to those children, students and youth who qualify for the Migrant Education Program in Colorado.  The majority of the 4,000+ eligible Colorado migrant children, students and youth are Latinos ranging from age 0-22 years old and services are provided through six regional Migrant Education Programs located in various parts of the state.  Come and learn about the creativity and flexibility of services the Migrant Program employs to reach all of its constituents!

4-4:55   Play Write Edit Repeat: Make Great Lesson Plans for Instruction in Any Language, presented by Simone Groene-Nieto and Nate Stone of the Denver Public Library

Learn how the Community Technology Center at DPL writes their successful lesson plans for technology instruction for all students, including Spanish speakers.  In this session you’ll be tasked with teaching each other how to build shapes out of putty and toothpicks using four phases of lesson plan design.  The skills you learn here you will help you develop your own materials for instruction of any kind.  Nate and Simone, the CTC’s maestros, will discuss how they used this iterative lesson plan design model to create the highly effective and successful Computacion Basica series for Denver’s Spanish speakers, as well as give you access to ALL of their Spanish lesson plans and handouts.
